A Certified Flood Manager (CFM) is someone who has passed an certification examination through the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM).  This national certification program recognizes a prerequisite level of knowledge necessary for effective floodplain management as well as continuing education and professional development to that end.  According to the ASFPM, the “certification program will lay the foundation for ensuring that highly qualified individuals are available to meet the challenge of breaking the [flooding] damage cycle and stopping its negative drain on the nation’s human, financial, and natural resources.”

The following requirements are recommended for candidates seeking to sit for the CFM exam:
-A minimum of one year of full-time floodplain management experience; OR
-A higher education degree in a related field; OR
-Complete the four-day 0273 Managing Floodplain Development through the National Flood Insurance Program course, which is offered by EMI (E0273), by FEMA Regions or by ASFPM, a state NFIP coordinator or an ASFPM chapter (L0273).
-Complete the on-demand NFIP101 virtual course hosted on ASFPM’s Learning Management System.

The ASFPM website includes detailed information about the CFM certification program.  To access, navigate to the ASFPM home page and click on “Certification Program (CFM)” on the menu.

Many CAFM events will provide credit towards maintaining your CAFM certification.  Credits are announced for each event following review and approval by ASFPM.
